Sanxing Township, Chongming, Shanghai

Project information

The project, located in the Pastoral Complex of Sanxing Town, involves an energy Internet of scenarios based on flexible resources, smart energy storage and cascade battery use, electric vehicle charging and discharging, regional smart energy use. It is a pastoral complex microgrid system, where generation, grid, load, and storage are integrated together.

The project comes with two system solutions - grid-connected and off-grid: The grid-connected solution covers electrical loads of residential and municipal works such as 215+55kWp crystalline silicon PV/6kWp thin-film PV, 100kW/282kWh lithium iron phosphate batteries, 2×60kW charging piles, and street lights; the off-grid solution covers electrical loads of 3kWp thin-film PV, 5kW wind turbines, 24kW/78kWh power batteries for cascade use, and lawn lamps, light strips, and water pumps for landscape lighting, and agricultural utilization of electricity.

Under the project, Shanghai Electric provided Sanxing Town with an integrated smart energy solution for the charging and storage of wind and solar power, worked on system integration, and supplied 80% of the equipment with our own products. The independently-developed smart energy management platform in this project monitors and analyzes the working status of all subsystems, making possible intelligent and unattended management.

Benefits to customers

The project has been in safe operation for more than 2 years since its official handover on December 5, 2018. A total of more than 400 MWh of electricity has been generated, with 0 kg of carbon dioxide emitted, contributing to a reduction of 400 tons in carbon dioxide emission. These figures point to the success of this project as the first domestically developed and designed solution for a pastoral complex microgrid system, where generation, grid, load, and storage are integrated together.

The project drew domestic and foreign attention since its operation. Internationally, it was inspected by UN-HABITAT on-site and developers were interviewed by UN Environment. At home, the project was praised by the Market Construction Department of the Ministry of Commerce, and also received field investigations by a number of government officials and companies, including leaders of the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Jiangsu Provincial Government, as well as China Datang Corporation Ltd., Jingmei Group, China Shenhua Energy Company Limited, and China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group. The project was not only covered by more than 54 media agencies including Jiefang Daily and China Energy News, but also won the Top 10 Energy Internet Project Award from the latter.
