The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games are in full swing. It is the first international sporting event held after China proposed its strategic goals of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”. One of its most important features is being “green and environment-friendly”, which means that “green power” covers all avenues. Shanghai Electric has contributed to the clean “green power” for the Winter Olympics.

The wind turbines for the hydrogen production project in Chongli, Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, were manufactured and installed by Shanghai Electric’s Wind Power Group. The hydrogen produced by the wind farm provides energy for the hydrogen-powered transit buses in Zhangjiakou, the city co-hosting the Beijing Winter Olympics. The Chongli Wind Farm for Hydrogen Production covers an area of more than 60 mu (4 ha.), with the highest altitude close to 2,000 meters, and the first turbine of the project has been hoisted and installed at the end of March 2021. At present, 16 white wind turbines are scattered among the mountains, turning constantly with the howling north wind, forming a unique sight. Due to the high altitude, the ambient temperature at the wind farm is below freezing all year round; and is close to -30°C at the coldest time.

Let’s go back to June 2019. The contract of 30 MW PV +10 MWh energy storage + 150 MW wind power hybrid project, as part of the multi-energy integration and optimization demonstration project of Zhangjiakou “Olympic Clean Energy City”, was signed in Beijing by Shanghai Electric New Energy Company. The management department of the demonstration project was then set up to ensure the high-quality completion of the project. Meanwhile, the project department also formulated timely measures for COVID-19 prevention and control, as well as provided psychological support to the staff by organizing several seminars for key construction teams. With the strong support from all parties, all project personnel have successfully avoided COVID-19 infection and safety incidents. The multi-energy integration and optimization demonstration project of Zhangjiakou “Olympic Clean Energy City” commenced in October 2019 and was put into operation at the end of December 2020. The project can save 1.48 million tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3.69 million tons per year.
