Shanghai Steam Turbine Plant is located in the southwest Shanghai and borders on Huangpu River with an area of about 10,000 square kilometers and a plant area of about 210,000 square meters. It has had 1300 sets of main equipment including 240 sets of precision, major and rare equipment. The Plant is with powerful technical strength, exquisite processes, advanced equipment and complete machining varieties as well as advanced measuring, physical, chemical and testing means, and possesses many laboratories, computer centers, automation control centers and other facilities. In addition, the Plant has had about 3,000 employees. Among these employees, engineering technical personnel take up 20% and senior engineers 39.3%. The Plant put emphasis on designing and manufacturing thermal power and nuclear power steam turbines as well as large-scale gas turbines, and also manufactures other power machinery such as ship steam turbine and wind driven generators. Its products have occupied over 35% of domestic market share, and exported to Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Burma, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bengal and other countries. The output of steam turbines has exceeded that of other enterprises at home and abroad engaged in the same trade and ranked first in the world.

The Plant was formerly Universal Machines Co., Ltd. prepared and established by the Resources Committee on March 28, 1946. After the new China was founded, the Plant was named Shanghai Steam Turbine Plant by the country on August 30, 1953, the first steam turbine designing and manufacturing enterprise in China, known as “Cradle of Chinese Steam Turbine”. In December 1995, the Plant and American Westinghouse Company joined capital and established Shanghai Stem Turbine Co., Ltd. with the stock equity held by Chinese party. In 1999, Westinghouse Company transferred its shares to German Siemens Company, thus it became one of global partners of Siemens Company. At present, it has been an important member of Shanghai Electric Power Station Equipment Co., Ltd. established by Shanghai Electric and Siemens Company through joint capital, abbreviated to STP.

Up to now since 1953, Shanghai Steam Turbine Plant has passed 57 years. It has witnessed the development history of Chinese power station equipment manufacture. Over 30 years of reform and opening to the outside world has brought vitality for it. The Plant has gone through three development stages: the stage of standing on its own and self-dependence, at which the first made-in-China steam turbine came into being; the stage of introduction, absorption and continuous optimization, at which the first imported 300,000KW steam turbine was manufactured in China; the stage of joint capital, cooperation and rapid development, at which became a large-scale enterprise with the output ranking first in the steam turbine industry in the world. Nowadays, Shanghai Steam Turbine Plant has been the first enterprise in China passing ISO9001 Quality System Certification, ISO14001 Environmental Management System Certification and oHAMS18001Occupational Health and Safety Management System Certification. In addition, it has passed ASME Evidence Obtaining and Joint Inspection, obtained ASME “U” steel seal and received the passport to the world.

Nowadays, Shanghai Steam Turbine Plant people are taking the event that General Secretary Hu Jintao visited the Plant in person as the driving force, focusing on national strategy, deeply carrying out the Scientific Outlook on Development, firmly building “internationalization concept, legal sense and the concept of running an enterprise in a hardworking and thrifty way” with the courage of leading the industry, leading modern manufacturing industry and leading modern industry, creating “a century-old shop” in a good and fast way and striving to make new contribution to development of Chinese power station equipment manufacturing industry.
