The History of the Technological Development of Shanghai Electric
Shanghai Electric is one of the largest integrated equipment manufacturing enterprises in China.
The company has a long and rich history that started when China began to operate ”in-country” mechanical and electrical industries. In March 2004, the Shanghai Electric (Group) Corporation established Shanghai Electric. Shanghai Electric was named the Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited. Trading in the Company’s H Shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange commenced in April, 2005. In December 2008, the Company acquired the Shanghai Electric Power Transmission & Distribution Group through a stock trade, and trading in the Company’s A Shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange commenced. Up through the end of 2009, the Company’s registered capital was RMB12.824 billion.
The four major business sectors of Shanghai Electric are: new energy, high-efficiency and clean energy, industrial equipment, and modern service industries. Capable of supplying entire packages of power equipment, acting as a main contractor, and providing modern integrated facilities for their customers, the Company is well in step with the competition. Through reforms and development, Shanghai Electric has been enhancing its core competitiveness and innovative capacities, and has made robust progress, including the manufacturing of China’s first 6,000 KW coal-fired power set, the world’s first turbine generator with an internal water cooled stator and rotor, China’s first 12,000 MT water press, the world’s first surface grinding machine, China’s first 300,000 KW nuclear power set, China’s first large crank used on vessels, and China’s first 1,000 MW ultra--supercritical coal-fired power set.
Up until 2009, the value of the Company’s business orders in the power-generating equipment sector had grown to over RMB190 billion. The comany has contracted for six projects of 1,000 MW nuclear conventional islands.
The company’s production of elevators per single factory ranks the as first in the world and it has been become the first enterprise in the world with the capability to produce 30,000 elevators annually and that has sold a total of over 200,000 elevators. In addition, with the success of manufacturing a 16,500 MT oil hydraulic machine, the Company has laid a solid foundation for the manufacturing large casting and forging items. With regard to its printing and packaging equipment, air-conditioning and digital grinding machines, the Company’s shares in the domestic market ranks as first. In 2009, the Shanghai Electric brand was regarded as one of the top 10 leading big brands in the field in China and was included on the list of the top 500 Asian brand as well as being considered as one of the world’s 225 largest international contractors. In the same year, Shanghai Electric ranked the 472nd among the Financial Times Global 500, 61st among China’s 500 largest companies, plus ranked as the 3rd amongst China’s 500 largest machinery enterprises.
